How to grow an eremurus garden.
 The tuberous roots of eremurus (which resemble a starfish) are brittle, so handle them carefully. Dig a wide, shallow hole and plant with the pointed bud in the center facing up. In a windy site, the stems of tall varieties may need staking. If, after several years, plants become crowded, lift the roots carefully in fall with a lifting fork and carefully separate them and replant. For winter protection of eremurus bulbs, provide protection in the fall, such as leaves or grass clippings up to 1 foot thick. Prior to planting, eremurus bulbs may appear spongy and somewhat discolored. This is normal and is not an indication of unthriftiness. www.flowersbulbs.com
